Folding arm awnings are ideal as a roll away cover for a patio, deck, balcony or commercial applications such as restaurants. With a folding arm awning you can create an outdoor room that protects against the sun or light rain.

In folding arm awnings the arms fold horizontally instead of vertically as in other awnings. The folding arm awning is cantilevered out from the wall so one is able to walk around underneath the awning without walking into the arms and no intrusive posts. When the awning is retracted the space is free of any structure.

Folding Arm Awning Installation

Folding arm awnings can be mounted onto the face of a building. On a brick wall seven courses of bricks are necessary above the awning.

With the addition of fascia or eave brackets a folding arm awning can be installed from the rafters of the roof where there are insufficient courses of bricks in the wall to support the awning. The fascia brackets are installed by cutting a slot in the fascia just below the gutter. The bracket is pushed in through the slot and bolted to the adjacent rafter. The folding arm awning is then attached to these brackets. This effectively 'ties' the folding arm awning to the roof structure. In addition to being a very secure way to fit the folding arm awning, it allows the awning to be mounted up high near the gutter.

Folding Arm Awning Operation

The maximum width of a folding arm awning is 25 metres and the maximum projection is 4.0 metres. The width of the awning must be 500mm wider than the arm projection to allow the arms to fold, with the exception of the unique Stratos 1 oversquare folding arm awning.

A folding arm awning can be operated either by crank handle or electric motor but electric motors are recommended where the awning has more than two arms (greater than 6 metres in width). The tubular awning motor is concealed within the tube that the fabric rolls onto. When motorised the awning is operated with a remote control which can be hand held or wall mounted.

A folding arm awning should be rolled away whenever the wind seems to be moving the awning too much and it should never be left extended whilst the house is unattended. An automatic wind sensor can provide a degree of protection. It will roll the awning away when the wind exceeds a preset level. While the wind sensor provides protection in most conditions, a sudden extreme gust of wind could damage an awning before it can retract. This is particularly the case for an awning with a large projection or drop which takes some time to retract.

The slope (pitch) of the Folding Arm Awning can be adjusted with an allen key. Customer adjustable pitch control via a crank handle is available as an extra option on the Stratos 1 folding arm awning.

If sufficient slope can be obtained, a folding arm awning will withstand light showers but it should be considered as a sunscreen rather than as a retractable roof due to wind restrictions. Ideally the awning requires a minimum pitch of 15 degrees to ensure that rain water will not pool on the fabric.

German Made Folding Arm Awnings

Our premium folding arm awnings are made in Germany - the Mercedes Benz of folding arm awnings. Stylish innovative and highly reliable, backed by a five year warranty.

All operating components are designed and manufactured in Germany and certified by the international testing agency TUV to the European standard 'CE Marking'.

Unlike early model folding arms that utilised chains, the folding arms use tensioned, spring loaded, PVC coated cables that provide maximum wind stability and fabric tension.

The arms are able to withstand 120,000 cycles of stress, as certified by Materials Testing authority of Germany. If the awning is operated once a day, that equates to over two hundred years.

Stratos 1 Folding Arm Awning

The Stratos 1 folding arm awnings have a variety of unique options combined with the strength of the Voss Secuflex folding arms making the Stratos 1 a mainstay of the awning industry. Installation is easy and possible in most circumstances. It has an open fabric roll and a straight or scallop valance. For additional protection the awning can be fitted with an extruded aluminium pelmet powdercoated to your choice of colour.

Oversquare - The smart way to squeeze a big projection into a narrow space. With Oversquare we are able to offer an awning which will project to a distance greater than its width. For example, 4 m. projection with only 2.5 m. width

Selectapitch - With this feature you can change the angle of your awning to block the afternoon sun, or even use it as a rain shelter in calm conditions.

Any angle from horizontal to vertical can be easily and quickly set, with the handle adjusting the pitch of both arms simultaneously.

Stratos 3 is a slimline cassette folding arm awning designed for those who who require the highest quality awning with an unobtrusive, contempory design. The elegant lines of the Stratos 3 suite both residential and commercial applications.

Stratos 3 is a contemporary style of folding arm awning that retracts neatly into a slimline casing. At the core of the Stratos 3 is the world leading Aluxor mechanism. Kompakt Cassette Folding Arm Awning

The Kompakt Cassette folding arm awning is made by Lewens Sonnenschutz-Systeme in Germany. It is a close fitting cassette awning designed to fit snugly against a wall. Although only 20cm high by 20cm deep, the excellent design of the cassette incorporates a 40 x 40 mm square bar that gives great strength and versatility for installation. For example if the awning is to be mounted onto rafters or studs the mounting brackets are not restricted to being positioned exactly at the arms or the ends of the awning.

As well as its compact appearance, the awning has many functional design features including a lip at the top edge of the cassette to prevent dew and light rain from leaving annoying dust trails on the front profile of the awning. An extruded aluminium fabric cover shell conceals the fabric roll even when the awning is open. The front profile incorporates a double hollow chamber for increased rigidity and an integral rain gutter. In light rain water drains off at the side through concealed drain holes in the end caps.

The Lewens folding arms are renowned for their strength. Other German awning manufacturers proudly boast that their awnings incorporate Lewens folding arms. The grandfather of the current managing director is credited as being the inventor of the folding arm awning.

The high spring tension provided by the triple springs ensures that the awning fabric is taut and will not rest on the arm joints. Many awning manufactures use marine grade cables in the hinges of the folding arms. Lewens use heavy duty aircraft grade cables which have more strength and importantly far more resilience to fatigue failure.

Millenium Folding Arm Awning

The Millenium folding arm awning is a full cassette awning made by Lewens Sonnenschutz-Systeme in Germany. It is a very low profile cassette awning designed to fit snugly against a wall. It's extremely compact dimenions - only 170mm in height and 249mm deep - make it one of the most discrete folding arm awnings available.

An extruded aluminium fabric cover shell conceals the fabric roll even when the awning is open. As with the Kompakt awning, thefront profile incorporates a double hollow chamber for increased rigidity and an integral rain gutter. In light rain water drains off at the side through concealed drain holes in the end caps.

Sundowner Basic Folding Arm Awning

The Sundowner is our basic model folding arm awning. The backbone of a Sundowner folding arm awning is a 40mm x 40mm powdercoated, galvanised steel square bar. All operating components are manufactured from powdercoated aluminium in Korea and all nuts and bolts are marine grade stainless steel. Operation is either manual or motorised with an optional wind sensor.

The Sundowner Plus has an extruded powdercoated aluminium hood to provide protection against corrosion and dirt.
