Traditional Awnings

TRADITIONAL AWNINGS

Traditional awnings include Automatic Awnings, Convertible Awnings, Straight Drop Verandah Blinds in both canvas and clear PVC and Shop Blinds. They have been in use in Australia for over 50 years and their appearance complements the more traditional Federation style building.

Automatic Awnings

The Automatic Awning is a simple robust awning.

The main advantage of an Automatic Awning is that it does not project far from the wall, so if the driveway or path runs close to the window, the awning will not impede access.

The arms are available in 150, 300 and 450mm projection. The greater projection will give greater ventilation through an open window. The awning will cover the entire window and so is suitable for facing any direction for sun protection. It is however more suitable on east of west facing windows.

The top roller can be enclosed in a headbox. The fabric is retracted by a spring enclosed within the tube upon which the fabric rolls. To extend the awning, if it is not possible to reach the bottom bar, a boat hook must be used. It is hooked into a loop, which is centrally located on the bottom bar, and pulled down.

When the awning is extended the arms slide along the running irons. When it has been extended the required amount the arms lock themselves in position on the running irons. To release the arms they must be pulled downwards and pushed back towards the window.

The headbox and front rail are roll-formed Colourbond steel and all other components are galvanized steel.

Automatic Awning
It is fitted on face at least one brick wider than the window.

If fitting to a wooden framed house the width of the awning is 32mm wider than the centre to centre position of the studs to which the awning is to be mounted.

Specifications:
Maximum width: 3500mm
Maximum drop: 2850mm

Convertible Awnings

Ozsun Convertible awnings are a basic traditional pivot arm awning. They are made of galvanized steel components, cord operated and extend by gravity.

The advantages of a Convertible Awning are simple, reliable operation, long life and low cost.

Its disadvantage is that, particularly in larger sizes, it can be heavy and difficult for older people to operate.

Convertible awning brackets can be adapted to fit almost any situation but it is usual to face fit the awning at least one brick wider than the window opening. This is to prevent the sun coming in beside the fabric when the sun is not directly in front of the awning.

A Convertible awning is suitable for windows that face any direction. When the awning is partially extended it provides protection from overhead sun i.e. north facing windows, whilst still retaining a view to the outside. When the awning is fully extended it covers the entire window and provides protection from sun at low angles i.e. facing east or west.

The lengths of the arms are approximately half the drop of the awning.

This type of awning does not normally have a headbox but one can be supplied if required.

Convertible Awning
If installing on a wooden framed house the pin width of a Convertible Awning is 70mm wider than the centre to centre width of the studs to which the awning is to be mounted if tail brackets are used.

The awning should also be mounted if possible higher than the window to prevent sun coming over the top of the awning and also so that it is not visible from inside when retracted.

Specifications:
Maximum width: 3500mm
Maximum drop:  2850mm

Florentine Awnings

Ozsun Florentine Awnings are similar to the Convertible although the hinge point of the arms is adjustable.

Usually to retract fully, the arms must be in the standard position but, because the arm hinges are mounted on slides, when the awning is extended the arms can be pushed upwards to make the fabric more horizontal.

Straight Drop Verandah Blind

The Straight Drop Verandah Blind is another simple traditional type of external blind. Retracted by rope and pulley and extended by gravity.

It has no arms and when fully extended it is held down by straps to prevent it swinging in the wind.

When the rope is pulled to retract the blind, the fabric rolls around a tube at the base of the blind.

Straight Drop Verandah Blind
The Straight Drop Verandah Blind is ideal to use where it is not possible to fit arms for a standard awning i.e. on the edge of a pergola especially where the top fixing position slopes from one side to the other.

Its main function is to protect against low sun angles i.e. east or west facing but it is also used as a privacy screen.

Specifications:
Maximum width: 5000mm
Maximum drop: 3150mm

Clear PVC Straight Drop Verandah Blind

A variation of the Straight Drop Verandah Blind is the Clear PVC Blind.

It is best used to keep alfresco dining areas warm in winter and dry in rainy periods.

Clear PVC Blind with zips
PVC is also available in a range of colours, although clear is most popular as it retains a view of the outside.

The Clear PVC Straight Drop is popular as a wind break in the alfresco dining areas of restaurants and verandahs where it is often fitted with zips each side.

Specifications:
Maximum width: 5000mm
Maximum drop: 3150mm

Shop Blind

Another variation of the Straight Drop Verandah Blind is the Shop Blind which hangs down from the edge of the metal awning and is contained by "J" hooks.
