Project brief
Provide sun and rain protection to customers dining in the shopping centres alfresco eatery, whilst reducing the noise to surrounding residents. The roof system will allow the shopping centres eateries to become more profitable and accessible, by being able to operate all year round in all weather conditions.
Project specifics
This project involved our premium business partner Helioscreen to develop a unique commercial retractable roof which not only protected patrons dining in the shopping centres alfresco eatery from the harsh Australian conditions, but also, added value to the community by reducing the noise in residential apartments residing above the eatery.
After great success with previous projects, Top Ryde city shopping centre continued works to the level 1 terrace over the dining precinct by adding a further 36m balcony to the existing area.

For the first time in Australia a unique sound deadening acoustic architectural membrane ‘Soundtex’ was used to reduce noise for the residences above the alfresco dining area. In combination with the ‘Soundtex’ membrane, a second layer of Dickson perforated acrylic fabric ‘Aura’ was attached to the underside of the membrane for a softer fabric appearance and as an additional acoustic barrier as well as increasing the airflow between the fabrics, thanks to the micro perforations in the fabric.
Covering two main areas at the Top Ryde City complex the Ozsun All Seasons systems can open and close at the touch of a button or be connected to a central building management system, allowing complete control over rain, sun and wind sensors to keep the systems working to the appropriate conditions. Each system is able to be operated all together or individually for the perfect level of weather protection of shade from the harsh western sun that the balcony receives late afternoon.
